Reconciliation

Through

Art

Promoting, digitizing, and distributing Indigenous Art, ensuring cultural preservation and equitable compensation for artists.

MISSION & VISION

Honoring Story and Spirit through Economic Reconciliation.

At Miskwaadesi M’Nauhan Decorative Arts Inc. (MMDA), our work is rooted in the belief that Indigenous art is not merely decorative. It is a living expression of identity, story, teaching, memory, beauty, and relationship.

We exist to support Indigenous artists, expand access to authentic Indigenous art, and contribute to meaningful Economic Reconciliation through respectful, ethical, and culturally grounded practice.

Our philosophical approach is guided by a commitment to integrity, reciprocity, respect, and responsibility. In this spirit, we see strong alignment between MMDA’s purpose and the Seven Grandfather Teachings: Love, Truth, Respect, Wisdom, Humility, Honesty, and Bravery. We offer that relationship as a respectful point of guidance for our work, not as a substitute for the diversity of Indigenous teachings across Nations.

"Embracing Indigenous art and artists in Canada sustains and revitalizes cultural heritage — keeping cultures vibrant and dynamic while educating others about the richness of Indigenous identities."

OUR COMMITMENTS

Core Values

01

RESPECT

We honour artists, cultures, communities, and the teachings carried through Indigenous art. MMDA is committed to cultural respect in how artwork is presented, sold, reproduced, and discussed. We recognize that some works carry cultural protocols, and those protocols must be respected.

02

TRUTH

We believe in authenticity, accurate representation, and honest recognition of Indigenous artists and their work. MMDA exists in part because authentic Indigenous art has too often been underrepresented, undervalued, misrepresented, or imitated without proper credit or compensation. We are committed to helping correct those conditions through truthful representation and ethical practice.

03

HONESTY

We believe in authenticity, accurate representation, and honest recognition of Indigenous artists and their work. MMDA exists in part because authentic Indigenous art has too often been underrepresented, undervalued, misrepresented, or imitated without proper credit or compensation. We are committed to helping correct those conditions through truthful representation and ethical practice.

04

Humility

We approach this work with the understanding that MMDA is not the source of the art’s meaning — the artist is. Our role is to support, uplift, and steward opportunity, while listening carefully and ensuring the artist’s voice remains central. Humility also means recognizing the diversity of Indigenous experiences and not treating any one perspective as universal.

05

WISDOM

We seek to act with care, reflection, and long-term responsibility. MMDA recognizes the historical and ongoing barriers facing Indigenous artists, and we believe wise action means building professional pathways that are sustainable, respectful, and responsive to those realities. This includes protecting artists’ rights, respecting intellectual property, and supporting long-term growth and visibility.

06

LOVE

We understand love here as care for people, community, culture, and creation. MMDA’s work is grounded in a genuine commitment to Indigenous artists and to the cultural beauty, resilience, and humanity reflected in their work. We believe art can foster pride, healing, connection, and belonging.

07

BRAVERY

It takes courage to challenge systems that have historically excluded or exploited Indigenous artists. MMDA embraces that responsibility by advocating for fair market access, better visibility, equitable compensation, and the rightful place of Indigenous art in corporate, public, and private spaces. Bravery also means creating new pathways where old ones have failed.

ACTIONS

Our Values In Practice

01

Cultural Respect

We honour Indigenous identities, stories, and protocols in every aspect of our work.

02

Artist Empowerment

We support both emerging and established Indigenous artists through visibility, opportunity, and professional presentation.

03

Authenticity

We are committed to authentic Indigenous art and truthful artist representation.

04

Fairness and Equity

We promote fair market pricing, ethical agreements, and improved access to opportunity.

05

Reciprocity

We see our work as relational, not extractive. Artists are not suppliers to be used; they are partners whose rights, voices, and visions matter.

06

Integrity

We operate with transparency, consent, professional standards, and accountability.

07

Reconciliation Through Action

We believe reconciliation must be visible, practical, and economic as well as symbolic. MMDA supports this by creating pathways for Indigenous art to be meaningfully present in workplaces, institutions, and homes.

Our Philosophy

At Miskwaadesi M’Nauhan Decorative Arts Inc., our philosophy begins with a simple understanding: Indigenous art is not merely decorative. It carries story, identity, teaching, relationship, and presence. It reflects the strength of Indigenous cultures and the enduring creativity of artists whose voices deserve to be seen, valued, and supported.

MMDA was founded in response to real and ongoing gaps. Authentic Indigenous art remains underrepresented in many corporate and private spaces, while many Indigenous artists continue to face barriers to market access, fair compensation, visibility, and professional development. Our role is to help address those gaps with purpose, care, and accountability.

We believe this work is part of Economic Reconciliation in action. By building pathways between Indigenous artists and broader markets, we help create opportunities that are not extractive, but relational. We aim to support artists in ways that increase visibility, honour authorship, and strengthen long-term sustainability.

Our approach is grounded in cultural respect. We recognize that Indigenous art may carry teachings, stories, and protocols that must be treated carefully. MMDA’s artist materials and agreements are designed to ensure artwork is presented with consent, proper attribution, and respect for cultural guidance shared by the artist.

We also believe artists should remain central in the presentation and stewardship of their work. That is why MMDA’s model affirms artist rights, including copyright and moral rights, while committing to ethical handling, accurate representation, and clear agreement around sale, display, and licensing.

In spirit, our work aligns closely with values often reflected in the Seven Grandfather Teachings: Respect, Truth, Honesty, Humility, Wisdom, Love, and Bravery. We hold these not as a rigid corporate formula, but as a meaningful framework for how we want to work — with care, truthfulness, humility, courage, and responsibility. That means respecting artists and communities, being honest in our relationships, acting wisely in how work is shared, and showing bravery in building better pathways for Indigenous artists.

MMDA exists to help create spaces that are more reflective of Indigenous presence, more supportive of cultural revitalization, and more aligned with reconciliation as a lived responsibility. We believe authentic Indigenous art can transform environments, deepen reflection, and strengthen connection — not as an afterthought, but as an essential part of how spaces can hold meaning.

At the heart of our philosophy is this commitment:

  • to serve artists with integrity,
  • to build relationships through reciprocity,
  • to honour culture with respect,
  • and to help Indigenous art be recognized not only for its beauty, but for its power, truth, and enduring significance.
